Driver ed for homeschool teens in Arizona
Not legal advice. This guide does not say whether any program can be paid for with ESA or other public funds.
Homeschooled teens follow the same ADOT MVD Class G steps as any other Arizona teen: a permit at 15 years and 6 months, 6 months holding the permit, and one of ADOT's three experience options before the Class G license at 16 or older.
Options that fit a homeschool schedule
- Parent-supervised practice: ADOT Option 1 is at least 30 hours of supervised practice, including 10 at night, followed by the MVD road test.
- A private driving school program: ADOT Option 3 is completing a high school or privately operated driver education program, with proof of completion within twelve months of issuance, and ADOT lists it as "Road Test Waived". Daytime lesson slots can be easier to book on a homeschool schedule. Ask each school about its times.
- Defensive driving or traffic survival school driver ed: ADOT Option 2 lowers supervised practice to 20 hours, including 6 at night, and still requires the road test.
