The Arizona road test waiver, explained
Not legal advice. No school or guide can promise that you will pass or that you qualify for a waiver. Confirm with the school and ADOT MVD.
What ADOT says
On its teen license page, ADOT MVD lists three ways to meet the experience requirement. Option 3 is to complete a high school or privately operated driver education program and provide proof of completion within twelve months of issuance. ADOT labels that option "Road Test Waived". Options 1 and 2 (supervised practice hours) still require the road test.
For adults, ADOT's driver license FAQ says that driving schools do not issue waivers, and that an adult needs a permit and must pass the MVD road test.
How schools describe it
Many Arizona driving schools sell packages that they say include a road test waiver or a final evaluation. What is included varies by school and by package. When a school's own site says a package includes a waiver, our school pages quote that with the link and the date we checked. We do not mark any school as waiver eligible on our own.
Questions to ask a school
- Does this package end with a final evaluation that can waive the MVD road test for a Class G applicant?
- What happens if the student does not pass the evaluation?
- How many hours are behind the wheel, and are pickup and drop-off included?
